SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENT

Castrobros supports sustainability measures and strictly conform to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources regulations.

Our hake vessels are participating in the implementation of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for Namibian hake fishing. MSC certification certifies that a country’s fishing operations are managed and conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Our large pelagic vessels are listed on the International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) list of approved vessels. ICCAT implements measures to ensure the sustainability of the large pelagic fishery in the Atlantic Ocean.

Our vessels utilise fishing methods that minimise damage to the environment, including fishing methods that are selective to the target species, thereby reducing bycatches. Our vessels utilise modern technology and fishing methods that ensure less power consumption, thereby reducing pollution and carbon dioxide emissions.

We participate in preservation research. Our vessel “Joao N Castro” was made available to the Albatross Task Force (ATF) for research in mitigating the bird mortality in fishing in Namibia.

We have funded and participated in trials with Cape Fur Seal deterrent equipment, to prevent harm to marine mammals during fishing operations.
